Modeling. Inspiring. Phonics. Differentiation. Motivated.


These were just some of the key takeaways the Wolfpack WORKS beginning teachers identified from their winter PD sessions December 13th and 14th at the Friday Institute on NC State’s campus. December is a great time to step out of the classroom, reflect, and plan for where we are going. These two days of learning and inspiration did not disappoint.

Each day was kicked off with an motivating keynote speaker. Then beginning teachers chose breakout sessions to hone their early literacy instructional knowledge and skill. Sessions focused on diverse topics including read alouds, phonological awareness and phonics instruction, morning meeting, small group instruction, and writing instruction. We learned together about the coaching cycle and tools to make distance coaching work. Each member of our Wolfpack WORKS team helped plan and deliver professional learning throughout the day.

The best part of the day was the enthusiasm and participation from the beginning teachers. BTs greeted their coaches and colleagues warmly, as they have begun to build a professional learning community. Coaches and BTs engaged in thoughtful conversations and collaboration focused on best practices for supporting their K-2 students’ literacy learning. BTs also shared their experiences and growing expertise, while asking great questions and reflecting on how they could apply their new knowledge in the classroom. Everyone left energized for a new year of teaching, with new tools and ideas to put in place right away.
