Summer learning loss, also known as the “summer slide,” is the tendency for students, especially those from lower-income families, to lose some of the reading achievement gains they have made during the previous year in school (Allington & McGill-Franzen, 2003). Some children from lower socioeconomic families fall behind an average of two months in reading during the summer, and these losses are cumulative, building up each summer (Borman, 2000). According to a white paper published by the Collaborative Summer Library program in 2014, summer learning loss accounts for two-thirds of the 9th-grade achievement gap in reading between students from low-income households and their higher-income peers, so preventing summer learning loss is an urgent matter!!
As we are nearing the end of the school year in most of our Wolfpack WORKS schools, literacy coaches have been working hard to help their beginning teachers and families prevent summer learning loss. To support school-home connections, increase access to books for our students, and give parents tools to continue working with their children over the summer, our Wolfpack WORKS coaches collaborated to create a summer literacy website. Many of our beginning teachers reported feeling nervous about their students losing the gains they have worked so hard to make, so there is a lot of excitement as they are sharing this new resource with parents!
Teachers, families, and coaches are looking forward to ensuring that our students not only have fun this summer but also sustain the literacy growth they have achieved this year!
